Ear reshaping (Otoplasty)

Ear reshaping (Otoplasty)

Ear reshaping (otoplasty) is used to treat protruding ears or to reduce overly large ears. They will be reshaped to perfectly suit the individual facial contours. This can quite easily resolve the mental suffering caused by protruding ears.

Overview of the procedure

Pre-operative check-up

The pre-operative check-up complies with the European standard requirements within the framework of preparation for an anaesthetic.

Local anaesthetic: basic haemogram incl. blood clotting factor

Your local doctor or an internal specialist can perform the pre-operative check-up. The clinical report must not be older than 2 weeks.

The pre-operative check-up can be completely performed in the Czech Republic.

Merely removing the skin is not enough, as the tension of the cartilage will return the pinna to its previous position, and the skin will stretch again. Instead the surgeon must perform an incision of about 4 cm behind the ear along the anthelix. The excess cartilage will be thinned out and reshaped. The front of the ear will not be affected.

Incision techniques include:

  • The Stenström technique: weakening the cartilage on the front.
  • The Mustardé technique: reshaping the cartilage using stitches.
  • The Converse technique: reshaping the cartilage performing incisions.

The scars are invisible because they are behind the pinna.

Procedure duration

45 minutes to 1 hour per ear.

Local anaesthetic, or a general anaesthetic if operating on young children or if the patient is nervous.

Mostly outpatient; a short inpatient stay may be required (1 day).

Visit abroad

2-3 days.

Aftercare will be provided approx. 10 days after surgery by a local doctor of your choosing. To avoid complications, you should follow your doctor’s instructions.

We recommend a stay in Prague from 5-7 days. During this time you will have the opportunity at the clinic of your choice exercise daily after-care options.

Possible side effects

Pain within the wounded area, swelling.

To take into account before surgery

Discontinue use of aspirin 14 days in advance.
Reduce alcohol and nicotine consumption 2 weeks before and after surgery.
Surgery should not be performed before the age of 5 (no considerable growth is expected after the fourth year of life).

Recommendation after surgery

Approx. 1 week until fully recovered.
One week of wearing a head bandage, after which you wear a bandage at night for 4-6 weeks.
For about a month, you or your child should avoid any stretching, bending or touching of the treated area.
Heavy earrings should not be worn in the first month.
Those who wear glasses should switch to contact lenses, otherwise you may need to secure your glasses.
Children should be very careful with sport at school.

Healing process

Removal of stitches after 7-10 days if they are not self-dissolving, after which you are ready to resume everyday life and work.

Possible side effects

After-bleeding, haematomas, impaired circulation and wound healing, infected wound or cartilage.

Ready to socialise

After approx. 1 week.

Durability of results

Permanent results visible after 1-2 months.
