FAQ – Liposuction

Are the technical and personnel requirements the same as in Germany?
The clinics are equipped with the latest diagnostic devises and surgical instruments.
We work with experienced and renowned specialists. All specialists have been educated and trained in the USA and Europe, and are all specialists in plastic surgery.

How come it is so much cheaper?
In United Kingdom, the personnel, facility and advertising costs in addition to the taxes are far higher than in the Czech Republic. This is one reason why prices are higher in England and professional services far cheaper in the Czech Republic.
Expensive treatment is not necessarily better than cheaper treatment.
The price should not be the decisive criterion for an optimal outcome however, but rather the quality of the surgeon, the clinic and the technical facilities.

Am I suitable for liposuction?

All those with a healthy cardiovascular system and without any prior major illnesses are suitable liposuction patients. Those, who are close to their ideal body weight but still fighting resistant fat deposits, are the most suitable. The most common problematic areas for women are the thighs, lower abdomen, hips and buttocks. For men, they are the abdomen and hips.

Is there a minimum age restriction?

There is no general age restriction for liposuction, however underage patients usually won’t be treated. There are no other restrictions. The basis for liposuction is a state of health that allows surgery. You should know that with advancing age, the elasticity of the tissue weakens, which may affect results. Only an individual consultation and a medical examination can determine about whether liposuction would make sense; sometimes a lift is more appropriate.

Is it a painful procedure?

The patient will be unconscious and therefore free from pain during the procedure.

Is it possible to treat several different areas at once?
Yes, it is possible to treat several problematic areas at once. In doing so, the specialist will reshape the problematic areas so that your body’s proportions are once again harmonised. This is known as body contouring or liposhaping.

Is it possible to undergo liposuction several times?
There is nothing wrong with undergoing liposuction several times under certain conditions and in strict accordance with reasonable intervals between each procedure. Under certain circumstances (regarding the used technique and the volume), it is possible to combine different problem areas in one session.

How big and how visible will the stitches be?

The puncture points will be less than 5 mm in length. Depending on the method used, their diameter will not exceed 3-5 mm. Extremely subtle placement will mean these will be virtually invisible after healing.

How much fat can be removed in one session?
The amount of fat that can be removed depends on the patient’s physiology and the area to be removed. Under special safety conditions and using specially qualified techniques, it is possible to remove over 5 litres of fat in one session. Classic liposuction involves the removal of between 0.5 and 3 litres of fat. If treating the knees, ankles and arms, the volume removed will not be more than a few centilitres.

Is tumescent liposuction safer than classic liposuction?
Tumescent liposuction allows the surgeon to remove larger quantities of fat. There is less tissue damage and the fibres are unaffected, meaning the skin seems firmer afterwards.

What does the fine cannula technique involve?
The surgeon uses an extremely fine cannula. This allows them to work more precisely and to remove fat that lies directly beneath the upper layer of skin. In this way, skin irregularities can be reduced. Also, sensitive body parts where the standard cannulas can no longer be used can be treated.

What happens directly after liposuction?
The patient will need to wear a compression garment for 14-45 days. The affected areas may leak a little the day after surgery. Daily soft massages during the following weeks may improve the ultimate procedure results.

Is it normal to feel tiny lumps and indurations after liposuction?

Yes, it is normal to feel some irregularities in the early stage after liposuction. These are part of the healing process and should disappear after a few weeks. Massages and lymph drainages encourage the healing process.

Irregularities and lumps after liposuction?
This is mainly due to the individual state of one’s tissue and the firmness of one’s skin. Tender skin often shows irregularities that usually disappear over time.

How long will the visible swelling remain, and how can I speed recovery?
Swelling may be visible for approx. 2-4 weeks after a major procedure. On rare occasions, swelling may last a little longer if you suffer from lymphatic problems. Wearing the compression garment will encourage a reduction in the swelling. Professional lymph drainage will also help.

Can the fat deposits return?
Fat cells don’t necessarily increase in certain areas, but liposuction will not stop you gaining weight again. The remaining fat cells could increase again if weight is gained. However, the fat would spread more evenly after a liposuction, hence liposuction is suitable for reshaping, forming and harmonising the body proportions, but cannot replace a healthy diet.

How could you support the skin restructuring after surgery?
The method of treatment is important regarding the post-surgical skin tightening. The fine cannula technique can tighten the skin by suctioning directly underneath the skin.
After 4 weeks, you can try a few LPG treatments that may also encourage skin tightening.

When will I be able to return to work?
Depending on the medical check-up, you should be able to resume sedentary activities after 3-5 days. We recommend getting up every 30 minutes and moving around a bit at the beginning. It is very important to drink a lot of water and to take mineral supplements.

What is the exact procedure once I have reached a decision? How often will I need to visit the Czech clinic?
You will be hospitalised for one day. You will have to plan for at least 2-3 days in a hotel after surgery – depending on whether you’re travelling alone or with a companion.
You will have your first post-operative check-up one day after surgery. Your family doctor can perform a second check-up after 7 days should he be qualified to do so. It is up to you whether you wish to travel to the Czech Republic again for a second check-up and to have the stitches removed. Further examinations will be arranged according to your individual options. Should you be unable to return for a second check-up, your family doctor can perform this if qualified to do so.

I’m on medication. Will this be a problem?
We ask that you inform us and the doctor of the dosage and the type of medication at the beginning. Some medication can be taken without any problem, while others must be discontinued before surgery (e.g. aspirin or ibuprofen).

Which medication shouldn’t be taken right before and after surgery?
Acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin etc.) should be discontinued 14 days before surgery as it affects the function of the blood platelets. Antibiotics will not interfere with liposuction. Your surgeon will advise you of all the details.

Will I need to discontinue the pill before liposuction?
You can continue taking the pill, though you should inform your doctor. Please note that the effectiveness of your contraception may be severely reduced!

What are the risks of thrombosis?
With every surgical procedure, there is a risk of thrombosis. Thrombosis is a possible complication, though it is rarely associated with the tumescent technique. Moreover, preventive thrombosis treatment is today part of every modern process of surgery – especially in major procedure.

How tightly should the compression garments fit?
It should fit comfortably and not be too tight. Slight pressure is entirely sufficient. Compression garments are available in all our clinics. It will be optimally adjusted to your body measurements especially as fluids and absorption add some additional volume after surgery.

How long will I need to wear the compression garments?
Opinions vary a great deal as to how long compression garments should be worn. We advise wearing them for at least 2 weeks. If they feels comfortable, you can wear them for 6 however. Please consult your surgeon.

Should I lose some weight before surgery?
Ideally. yes. Reducing your weight is advantageous before liposuction. More effective results can be achieved in this way. It is also beneficial to maintain this reduced weight after surgery.

When will I get to see the final results after liposuction?
Although regression isn’t completed after 6 months, the final results are apparent. The swelling may not subside very quickly if you suffer from lymphatic problems. If treating the chin and cheeks, it may take longer to subside. Preliminary results are visible 2 days after surgery though.
The treated area will begin to swell 3-4 days after surgery. Most of the swelling will have subsided after 4 weeks, however the final results will not be visible until after 12 months. By then the tissue will continue shrinking and the skin will straighten itself. It is a gradual progress that requires patience.

How effective is liposuction in terms of the aesthetic results?
Liposuction leads to permanent and usually very positive results. In most cases, even older patients do not need to undergo an additional lift.

What about sports after liposuction?
You should rest for at least 4 weeks before resuming any sports. Gentle activities can be undertaken in consultation with your surgeon. It is important that you wear the compression garments. Swimming should be fine as soon as the haematomas have healed. If the incisions have healed and you’re feeling comfortable, you may even go swimming a little sooner.

What do I need to be aware of with regards to skin care after liposuction?
Simply use a good-quality lotion to moisturise the skin. This will support the skin’s regression process sufficiently. Medical lotions are needlessly expensive and will not lead to better results.

Will I need to avoid the sun and solariums after liposuction?
Depending on the individual case and the method used, you should refrain from overheating for at least 4 weeks. This may encourage the spread of germs inside the wound.

How can the scars best be cared for?
Scar-reducing plasters are recommended for fresh scars. Please use a slightly fatty lotion for the scars. It’s ok to use olive oil, for example, though this is not entirely practical. Should you wish to go out in the sun or visit a solarium, please cover your scars with plasters or a blemish cream.
